The
Sterecycle patented system is cleaner, safer, more cost
effective and more efficient than existing technologies
such as standard mechanical sorting “Material Recycling
Facilities”, in-vessel composting, Mechanical-Bio-Treatment,
advanced thermal treatment and incineration. Indeed, Sterecycle
can be integrated with existing systems to pre-recover
recyclables and dramatically improve system performance.
The
company has its first plant under construction, and is
close to signing its first contract with a local authority.
Commenting
on the Sterecycle investment, Andy Hinton said "Having
had experience of the autoclaving of medical waste with
White Rose Environmental, I am convinced that this is
the right solution for household waste. The European Landfill
Directive is forcing governments to promote recycling
and there is a huge opportunity for innovative young companies
like Sterecycle to take market share".
22
million tonnes of municipal waste are landfilled every
year in the UK and waste is increasing at 3% per annum
(Source: Environmental Agency). The EU Landfill Directive
requires member states to dramatically reduce the amount
of waste that is landfilled or face heavy fines. The UK
government is committed to reducing landfill and increasing
recycling, evidenced by the continuing increases in Landfill
Tax.
These
changes in landfill legislation and advantages the system
holds over existing technologies puts the innovative leaders
in new recycling technologies in a position to take large
share of this massive and fast growing market.
